Hello, and welcome to Texas TAPS, the portion of Patriot Ranch dedicated to everything shooting. My name is Sam Coleman, and I am a firearms instructor certified by the NRA, Texas CHL, and Utah CFP programs. I enjoy shooting competitively, but I feel my true calling in life is teaching others.
I offer classes for both the Texas Concealed Handgun License and the Utah Concealed Firearm Permit. Texas and Utah share a reciprocity agreement, so if you live in Texas, either license will extend the same privilege to conceal carry a handgun in Texas.
I also offer private instruction. I believe it is the duty of every man to be able to protect his family. The modern handgun and its modern techniques have been called the Martial Arts of the 21st Century. Just as the samuri of old, training and discipline are required to master the handgun, and in the unschooled hand, what was designed to save your life, just might take it. Training should never be underestimated.
Very recently, there has been some debate if the Utah CFP program should be allowed here in Texas. The crux of the argument seems to revolve around two issues. 1) Utah's class does not require shooting. This is true, but to be a Utah instructor, you also have to be an NRA instructor. Speaking for myself, it does not take me very long to spot unsafe gun handling practices. NRA instructors, as a group, are some of the best people for insuring safe gun handling. Utah recognizes and understands this as well, and puts the decision making where it belongs, in the hand of the individual, and not in the state. 2) The state of Utah charges $65.25 while the state of Texas charges $140 to do the same job. There is a Texas state senator complaining that Utah is taking money away from Texas. My response to this, Mr. Senator, stop overcharging your residents, and maybe they won't look for fair pricing elsewhere.
